Brief about Profession
Subhash started serving Indian Army as a commissioned officer in 1959 and his first
posting was in field area of Jammu & Kashmir. He fought for the country in the three wars after independence including war with China ( 1962) and wars with Pakistan ( 1965 & 1971), Commanded a brigade in insurgency area of Mizoram where he was awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. He retired as a Brigadier from Meerut Sub Area in 1994.
Thought of what to do after retirement loomed large in the mind of Subhash
during the last lap of his service. Initially he and his wife Jyoti decided to take care
of mentally retarded children. Soon, after retirement started a school called Disha’
for these children in 1994 in their own house. After running successfully for 4
years the school was shifted to Saket colony and from there again to Ganga
In the same year , Mr Kulbhusan Bakshi, a legendry social worker, approached him
with an offer to become first president of ‘ Kalyanam Karoti ‘ organization in Meerut. Polio and Blindness were big problems in the rural areas in 90s. With Mr Bakshi he visited several villages and was shocked to see to see the terrible condition of the Polio afflicted children. There were as many as 18 children in one village. They were mainly employed to take care of animals in Tabelas ( animal shelter). Their life seemed no better than that of animals they tended. Hence, he resolved to serve them, as well others, who are physically and visually challenged. Since then there was no looking back. 25 years later the scenario for physically challenged has drastically changed due primarily to Govt. Anti polio program. Percentage of polio afflicted patients has drastically reduced. Those who are there are being effectively taken care of the Govt. through a well managed system.
The first camp for eye patients and handicapped was organized in village Jangethi of Meerut in 1994. He set up an eye hospital inside the Cantonment Hospital, Meerut in 1995 with support from Cantt Board Meerut Cantt.. Nobel Laureate and Tibetan Guru Dalai Lama attended the function of inauguration and donated an Ambulance to the organization. Since then the organization has provided equipments to hundreds of handicapped persons . Also thousands of people have benefitted from eye hospital where apart from routine OPD facility hundreds of eye patients have availed facilities of advance eye surgery, free of cost..
Kalyanam Karoti Meerut runs all its philanthropic activities through active support from the public, active Volunteers imbued with spirit of service as also with help
